A BRIEF HISTORY OF OHRT & GOODMAN

Our reputation for excellent service and quality workmanship is built on four generations of our family serving Western New York for 125 years - since 1875.

FIRST GENERATION:

Even way back in 1875, when Louis Ohrt came to Buffalo from Germany, he was just continuing the sheet metal business he had learned from his family in the old country. He did many kinds of sheet metal jobs, especially fabricating sheet metal in the many slaughter houses in Buffalo's old East Side.

SECOND GENERATION:

Louis Ohrt had two sons and a daughter, Ray, Clarence, and Mildred Ohrt, who were better known by their nicknames "Honey", "Mose" and "Dolly ".

Louis was joined in the business by his two sons, and the business became known as Louis Ohrt & Sons. Later Louis' daughter, Dolly, did the office work for her brothers' business known as OHRT BROS.

Gradually, the sheetmetal business became more focused on roofing, flashings and gutter work in the summer and heating and ductwork in the winter.

THIRD GENERATION:

Neither Ray "Honey" Ohrt nor Clarence "Mose" Ohrt had sons, but both of Dolly's sons, Don and Joe, who had Dolly's married last name of Goodman, joined their mother and uncles working at Ohrt Bros. gaining practical work experience in the business until World War II.

Ray "Honey" Ohrt and his two nephews, Don & Joe Goodman, proudly served in the armed services during World War II, and the business was temporarily suspended.

After the war, Ray "Honey" Ohrt took his two nephews, Don and Joe Goodman, into partnership with him, and the business became known as Ohrt and Goodman Bros. Dolly still did the office work for her brother and her two sons.

Honey died in 1960 and when Joe left the business in 1970, the name was shortened to just Ohrt & Goodman.

FOURTH GENERATION:

In 1950, Donald R. Goodman had a son, Donald A. Goodman. From childhood he worked at Ohrt & Goodman Bros. during his school summer vacations and on weekends. In 1972, he graduated from college and joined his Dad full time in the business.

Today, one hundred and twenty-five years later, father and son are still working together in the business, serving the Home Improvement needs of people in the Buffalo area with the same excellent service and quality work started by Louis Ohrt in 1875.
